Rape, incest or if the fetus was deformed were the only conditions in which a woman was allowed to have an abortion performed. Once this was legal, anti-abortion laws started to appear under the leadership of the Catholic Church.
The government was becoming involved in the issue of abortion and the start of federal funded family planning programs. The government saw it as an opportunity to regulate the population issue and started to see contraceptives as a good idea. The issue on abortion and its laws were still, however, were having issues. In 1973 a woman by the name of Roe, decided to terminate her pregnancy through abortion. The court case was Roe v. Wade and asked if this was an abortion being performed to protect a woman’s physical or mental health.
