Those who entered the clinic became aware that this was someone completely confidential and no one would be aware of their visit. However, there was a law known as the “Comstock Law,” which forbidden anyone to pass any information about contraceptives. It was viewed as obscene and indecent material was against the law to provide any information to the public about birth control. Margaret Sanger, one of the women who opened the clinic in New York, was arrested for the second for violating the Comstock law. The first arrest was due to her using the U.S. mails to send birth control information.
The clinic opened in 1916 marked the beginning of woman fighting for their rights. Through out time period from 1916 to 1929 many things were starting to change in favor for women. More and more women started to fight for the same cause as Margaret Sanger. Fania Mindell was found guilty and was fined $50 for handing out pamphlets, which were called, What Every Girl Should Know. By 1923, three years after women gained their right to vote, men were becoming attracted to the birth control movement. By 1936 the Comstock law was over turned by Judge Augustus Hand and declared that birth control was not to be classified as obscene. It was clear that there were damages due to unplanned pregnancies and that there were benefits with the use of contraceptives. Many experiments were done to create contraceptive pills and those who are incapable of having child during the early 1950’s. It was reported that from the late 1940’s to the early 1950’s, an estimated 200,000 to 1,300,000 illegal abortions occurred yearly in the United States.
