s dropped, we are already destroying families who struggle with hunger and poverty. Our United States economy has dropped tremendously over the years. For example, the stock market dropped sharply and unemployment rates have been on a steady incline, the federal budget slid from a 236 billion dollar surplus to a 165 billion dollar deficit, and cash-strapped states are cutting social services (Woolsey, Nov. 2). If Congress and the President would pay more attention to what (I feel) is more important; our nation could improve. The money that would be used to kill innocent civilian lives could be used to help poor countries' agriculture, give them clean water, and provide some decent form of sanitation. These actions would show that the United States is a peaceful nation instead of a power hungry state eager for war.
Shortly after the United States was attacked on September 11, 2002 President George W. Bush declared Iraq, along with Iran and North Korea, as an axis of evil. Is Iraq truly evil? Spokespersons for the Bush administration claim that a chemical, biological, or nuclear weapon attack on the United States is imminent. It should be known that Saddam Hussein has used weapons of mass destruction in the past. Saddam initially acquired these weapons and used them as an ally and instrument of United States foreign policy against Iran (Oppose US war, Nov. 2). However, most of these weapons of mass destruction were destroyed during the 1990's according to the United Nations weapons inspections. Scott Ritter, a former weapons inspector for the United Nations, has repeatedly rejected the claim that Iraq has rebuilt its capacity of such weapons (Statement on War Against Iraq, Nov. 2). Although we can not rely on speculation, it is critical that we allow and support the United Nations to go back into Iraq in order to perform a thorough investigation of Saddam’s weapons arsenal.
