HANDLING OF IMPORTED FERTILIZER AND WHEAT AT PORTS

The agricultural sector of Pakistan economy is highly dependant on the timely import of fertilizer and its prompt and efficient distribution across the length and breadth of the country. The problem gets further compounded with the import of wheat and its handling and distribution. A study on handling and movement of imported fertilizer and wheat at ports during the preceding 2 years.

Synopsis given below;
• Due to operational constraints, historically, the railways has never been able to provide required number of 240 wagons daily on cyclic bases during fertilizers imports season (sep to feb) and there had been deficiency of 47 wagons and 31 wagons in the year 1991 to 92 and 92 to 93 respectfully.

• Extraordinary stress and strain was placed on NLC transportation resources and NLC had to lift fertilizers to the tune of 192,711 tons in 1991 to 92 and 395,772 tons in 1992-93.

• Fertilizer to the tune of 300, 245 & 181, 937 tons were moved through H.M.T. during 1991-92 and 1992-93 respectfully, at higher rates resulting...
