Package Tracking
The tracking of packages has helped our large competitors UPS and FedEx gain a competitive advantage in our market of mailing packages. Through recent research we have found that there are several ways that our company could go about implementing the idea of packing tracking to our company. The first and cheapest form of package tracking is done via e-mail. With this form of tracking, every package will receive a sticker with a tracking number that is very similar to a UPC label found on everything consumers buy. This sticker will be scanned every time the package arrives at one of our different locations and leaves that location. With this practice we will be able to let the customer know when the package arrived and when it actually left the depot. When customers bring their packages for shipment, they will be given the tracking number. Now all they will have to do to find out where their package currently is or whether it has arrived at its destination is to email our customer service department with their tracking number and in turn our customer service representatives will locate the package through the tracking software and email a response back to the customer. This form of package tracking involves a lot of human labor expense however the expense for new technology and software is minimal.
The next form of package tracking is almost fully automated and performed online. It will encompass most of the ideas as e-mail tracking, but will also encompass much greater software and will also require us to develop a company website before we can even begin to implement this program. The same ideas of having tracking stickers and scanning of the packages also applies to this form of package tracking, the big difference is in the software and hardware requirements.
