Sex is also discussed openly in Brave New World; it is not seen as a shameful act. Sex and the use of contraceptives it taught to children at young ages. Children are taught to use contraceptives every time they have sex (Sykes). They are encouraged to participate in sex play from a young age (Sykes). Those who feel awkward and uneasy about participating are quickly swept to a psychologist for mental evaluation. The debate whether to teach sexual education is wide-spread, but nationally more schools are likely to teach sexual education than to let it be an unspoken issue, or leave the matter for the parents to educate. Safe sex is more often taught to teenagers rather than the benefits of abstinence. As a fifth grader, a specialist personally taught our elementary class how to put a condom on and what methods of birth control are used. Even the religion in Brave New World takes on a sexual theme. During their “solidarity services,” members chant:
“Orgy-Porgy, Ford and fun,
Kiss the girls and make them one.
Boys at one with girls at peace;
Orgy-Porgy gives release” (Huxley).
Basically, this rhythmic poem metaphorically describes the actions leading to sex (“Kiss the girls”), sex itself (“Boys at one with girls at peace”), and the climax or orgasm (“Orgy-Porgy gives release”) that conclude the act of sex.
