Noises Off: Funny or Flat
Getting to the play was an event. I had a night class from 6 to 7:15. Normally this is not a problem but I had a horrible test that day and the last thing I wanted to do was go to a play. Don’t get me wrong I love plays, I am a theater major, but my brain was fried and I really wanted to go to my room and relax. Why am I telling you this you might ask, because Noises Off turned out to be exactly what I need for stress I had from the test. I loved the play, and I would gladly see it again. Everyone did a great job. Of course there were things in it I did not like but maybe the numbness in my brain did not let me notice them clearly.
I believe the story was told very clearly. Although I have studied this play in depth before, I still think the actors and director did a fabulous job telling the story. The relationships were clear, which is a challenge because of the major triangles that develop. It was clear that Lloyd was having a thing with both Brooke and Poppy. Also, the very complicated triangle of Dotty who was dating Garry but Garry thought Dotty had a thing for Frederick and he had not idea what was going on. I found this situation hilarious. The actors did a wonderful job making there odd situations seem believable. There were even time you could hear people in the audience urging the people on, telling them to do it or stop. The actors truly pulled us into there world. This was also because the play was so well written. The author kept the dialog simple and repetitive but it was the actions where he really shines. The complicated dance like movement in act 2 with the axe and bottle of whiskey was not only funny but amazing to watch. Overall, the play was believable and amazing to see.
The set was also something to marvel at. It was gorgeous. Although it filled the whole stage it did not look like a cartoon. Some sets that fill the stage look larger than life, like a child’...
