Alejandro Murrieta is one of the main characters in the movie “The Mask of Zorro”. He becomes Diego DeLavega’s replacement as Zorro, the legendary hero. Armed with his mask, and sword, the new Zorro tries to stop Don Rafael's plot to buy California, bring justice to the people entrapped by Spanish greed, and win the heart of Elena - Diego's daughter. Alejandro possesses the qualities of being caring, determined, courageous, and loyal which lead to his success.
One of new Zorro’s characteristics is that he is a caring person. He is giving, not taking. He tries to give peace and justice to poor people, not wanting anything back from them. He fights for his own reasons as well as for his people’s good. The ruler of the land, Don Rafael Monteiro, chooses peasants at random to be shot by a firing squad. This harshness makes Zorro very angry with Rafael, which proves that the hero has sympathy towards injustice as well as a caring personality.
Determination is another quality of Zorro. Don Diego trains the youth to inherit the legend of Zorro. ``You know how to use that?'' the old man asks, pointing to the younger one's sword. ``Yes,'' he says, ``the point goes into the other man.'' Alejandro’s strong will to learn makes him somewhat a humorous character in the movie and determination helps him pass his training after lessons in fencing, horsemanship, hand-to-hand combat, the arts of swinging from ropes, etc. At first, the hero does certain things imperfectly (namely, horseback riding), but eventually he becomes supremely skilled in the sword, and has a powerful and highly trained horse who answers to whistle cues. The hero also sets some goals, such as revenge on his brother’s killer and avenge for injustice to poor people of his country. Therefore, determination makes Alejandro a good student, as well as plays a big part in achieving his goals.
