How Does ENUM Work?


In order for ENUM to work properly, the two devices being used (telephone, computer, etc.) must be linked to the Internet in order for a proper client/server connection in the distribution of information. Figure 1 shows an example of an Internet “linked” telephone that is available on the market today. ENUM is a way of turning telephone numbers into Internet addresses by converting the numbers into domain names ending in “.arpa”. This procedure is needed for getting information across the network using an ENUM protocol. The telephone number being used is converted into a fully qualified E.164 number by adding the city (or area) and country code. “E.164” is the name of the international telephone numbering plan administered by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which specifies the format, structure, and administrative hierarchy of telephone numbers (Enum.o...
