From the headlines in our newspapers it might seem that the job market for information technology workers is on a decline, various sources indicate that there are currently between 350,000 and 400,000 IT jobs waiting for the individuals with the right skill-set to fill them and join the approximately eleven million individuals currently employed in IT-related positions. In addition, many of these currently unfilled positions are entry-level. But even entry-level positions require some level of experience. What do you need to know? Of course the type of experience required for any career depends on the position you’re applying for. Since there are so many different positions, so many divisions of the IT field, I have narrowed my research down to three in demand fields; Database administration, Web Design Specialists, and Networking Professionals.
During my search for post-graduation employment, database administrator positions seemed to outnumber all others. Below is a job posting found on Monster.Com for a Database Analyst/Administrator:
“Must have a working knowledge of relational database concepts. Have database experience with Sybase or MS Access, Oracle, DB2. Strong SQL skills in both Data Definition (Create) and Data Manipulation (Select). Good analytical database problem solving skills. Must have a working knowledge of UNIX (Solaris) from a user perspective. Must know how to use the 'man' (help) function in Solaris. Have intermediate programming skills. Posses a good working knowledge of UNIX Shell Scripting or PERL scripting. Have good analytical problem solving skills using the UNIX message logs.
