“The world of the athletic director is a dizzying one. Long irregular hours are spent talking to coaches, going to games, attending meetings, and overseeing an entire intuition’s athletic department. Stress levels can run high and sleep levels can run low.”
In recent years the number of female athletic directors has been on the increase, but it hasn’t kept up with the amount of females participating in intercollegiate athletics. In a study recently conducted, “Women in Intercollegiate Sport: A Longitudinal, National Study Twenty-Seven Year Update 1977-2004,” shows how much things have not changed for women in the profession. In 2004 there were 11 more female athletic directors from 2002, but the increase of total programs makes this number non-significant. The report also looked at the number of female athletic directors in the NCAA institutions. Division I schools showed the smallest percentage of female athletic directors with only 8.7 percent, Division II schools had 16.9 percent, and Division III schools had 27.5 percent female athletic directors. Clearly the statistics show that women have begun to break into the Division I athletic department more slowly than the smaller schools.
Judy Rose, athletic director at the University of North Carolina was interviewed in the article. She stated that the climate has improved greatly for women entering the field. Women are also being considered for the positions through internal promotions. In June of 2004, Dawn Rodgers accepted a position as the Athletic Director at Xavier University. She made the 24th female athletic director at NCAA Division I level. She stated that, “there is a willingness for college presidents to give serious consideration to females.” Despite all the strives that have been made, in some instances it is a, “tight men’s-only club,” stated Donna Lopiano, CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation.
