Steroids: Friend or Foe

Nothing gets my heart beating more than baseball, especially when my beloved New York Yankees play (and beat) the Boston Red Sox. I anxiously wait all winter long for the baseball season to start in April, or March if you count pre-season. However, my passion has been somewhat subdued as this year’s season approaches due to the steroid scandal that has completely overshadowed the games themselves. Many records, including the beloved, ever-sacred all time home run record by Hank Aaron, are on the brink of being broken by players who are strongly accused of having taken steroids. Steroids are drugs that are used in certain medical conditions that help build up ones muscle and physique. The controversy in baseball is that the players on the brink of breaking these long time records are only able to do so because they have been cheating by using performance enhancing drugs. Modern day players’ performances aren’t a true and accurate depiction of their natural talents. On the other hand, players today have many advantages that past generations lacked (like flying to games in airplanes or technologically advanced exercise equipment) and yet there is no controversy over whether those benefits should be prohibited. Furthermore, steroids are equally accessible for all players today, so one player shouldn’t have any advantage over another. Also, since steroids and growth hormone have been developed by man, man should be able to use it as he pleases.
