2 Pages 479 Words

Matt Brzychi, coordinator of recreational fitness and wellness programs at Princeton University has researched strength training and exercise for over 10 years and has pointed out the myths of multiple set training. He discovered that back in the 1970’ it had been noted that you can improve your muscle strength and size with fewer sets and less amount of training.
In his research he found two doctors named Dr. Carpinelli and Dr. Otto had reviewed and compared different number of sets (dating back to the 50’) and had concluded that 5 studies showed that multiple set training was greater than that of single set training but it only involved one exercise. Yet single set training does indeed work, as quoted by Dr. Carpinelli and Dr. Otto “ There is no evidence to suggest the response to single vs. multiple sets in trained athletes would differ from that in untrained individuals”. Even stated by veteran Dan Riley who’s a strength coach for prestige colleges and pro ball, “ Your goal must be to perform as few sets as possible while stimulating maximum gains, If performed properly only one set is needed to generate maximum gains. In our standard routines, one set of each exercise is performed”.
Mr. Brzychi discussed overload principle, your muscles must experience proper fatigue in order for them to strengthen and grow. Whether you perform one set or three sets, your muscle must feel that burn (fatigue) in order to get results from you’re training routines. By performing one set with your maximum amount of weight and effort, you would have accomplished what you would have done with multiple sets of weight.
Your work out should be done properly, and if your doing excess weight, make sure to have a spotter ( someone who helps you out) as you lift your maximum weight.
By no means is anybody saying to only do single set training. Multiple set training works as well, just make sure you’re muscles fee...
