Violence In the Game

Over the past few years, video games have been incorporated in our way of life. In many of these games, violence is a prominent aspect that has caused much controversy and concern throughout the media, members of government, and parents. They are concerned with the effects these violent games will have on children. Games such as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (GTA), Halo 2, JFK Reloaded, and Manhunt are a few of the games that are under the most scrutiny. In GTA, the main character is a gang banger who roams the virtual mean streets of San Andreas stealing cars, murdering police officers and beating innocent civilians to a bloody death, picking up prostitutes, and blowing up anything in the way with various weapons from his arsenal. Many other people feel that video game violence will not cause any unhealthy side effects, yet the games are merely a means to avert some aggression. These types of games, violent or not, take a lot of planning and funding to create and they bring in vast sums of money. Instead of banning violent video games, which should be viewed by all as a violation of ones constitutional rights, these games should be restricted to buyers who are of a proper age and maturity.
It is a known fact that in the American society today, there is an abundance of sex, profanity, and violence on television and in the movies. Mostly everyone is familiar with the term “sex sells,” and in the gaming industry that statement is very true, but along with sex, violence sells. Violence can be addictive in a way people don’t think about.
Everyone remembers watching the television on 9/11, watching the 2 hijacked planes crash into the World Trade Center tower over and over again. That was probably the most violent and tragic thing most people had ever seen, yet we were glued to the television to watch it repeatedly and wait to see what would happen next.
