The present aim of the Singapore Cricket Association is to achieve one-day international status by 2010 and to compete at the highest level on the international stage supported by a strong domestic infrastructure of adult and schoolboy league cricket which is on par with the other countries playing international cricket.

Their mission is as follows:

l To develop and promote the sport of cricket so as to raise the level of awareness, understanding and participating within Singapore.
l To create an infrastructure which is conducive to identifying and nurturing talented cricketers in order to compete and excel at the international level.
l To raise the standard of cricket in Singapore whilst instilling in our cricketers the game's traditional values and ensuring that cricket is played in the true spirit of the game.


History of Cricket

The beginnings of the cricket game on our planet are rather shrouded in mystery. The "club ball" or "creag", played in the 13th century in England, can be taken as the first crude form of cricket. It was only in 1744 that the first code of laws for cricket was drawn by the London Club.

The first recorded game of cricket in Singapore took place in 1837 on a spot near where the Padang, where the current home of cricket in Singapore is situated. Early games were usually played against the crews of visiting ships and so it could be months, or in some cases, years, between matches in Singapore during the 1830's and early 1840's.

However, the mid to late 1840's saw a steady influx of expatriates into the British colony and led to the founding of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) in 1852. The SCC is one of the oldest existing sporting clubs in the world and over the years has become an integral part of Singapore life.
