After knee surgery, after a two-month plus rehab and tournament layoff, Tiger Woods made an exclamation point at the Buick Invitational. Yes, his equipment is not as high-tech as the other players on tour are, but more importantly, his game is more high-tech than any other players are! Tiger said before the tournament, that despite his layoff, despite his surgery and rehab, that he was here to compete and test himself, test his knee, and test his game. He not only passed those tests but he made nearly straight A’s. Leading by two shots going into Sunday, and playing with the next best American player, Phil Mickelson, Tiger’s round was nearly an ideal paradigm on how to play when in front in the last round on a very long, very difficult golf course. At least through 10 holes he did that. On the 11th he turned into Superman. A simple 236-yard 4-iron into a 10 mph wind that wound up two-and-a-half feet short of the hole, dead on line! After making the putt he opened up a four shot lead – the same lead he held at the end.
So, after opening with a scrambling 70 on the far easier North course at Torrey Pines, Tiger returned a 66 and a pair of 68s over the long and more difficult South course. It was a performance hard to believe if you didn’t know Tiger Woods and his toughness of mind. To return to competition after surgery, after the layoff, after the rehab, we can only wonder about this wondrous young man.
