The Good and the Bad of Steroids
In today’s sports world athletes are doing anything that it takes to win. Some athletes will even cheat to win a championship. The biggest way that athletes cheat is by taking steroids. Steroids are the number one performance-enhancing drugs that athletes take. The most used steroid is the anabolic steroid. “Anabolic steroids are taken orally or injected, typically in cycles of weeks or months (referred to as cycles) rather than continuously.” Anabolic-androgenic steroids are man-made substances related to male sex hormones.” Taking anabolic steroids as an athlete has its advantages and its disadvantages.
When talking about the advantages that steroids give an athlete there are two major areas.




“Today, athletes and others abuse anabolic steroids to enhance performance and also to improve physical appearance.” The physical appearance advantages of taking steroids are obvious to the naked eye. Steroids help a person turn fat into muscle. Steroids also work for people that are small too. The way that steroids help small people is that the steroids build body mass and muscle.
The performance advantage of taking steroids is very simple. Steroids take an average athlete and turn the athlete into a great athlete. “Steroids help athletes run faster, jump higher, and hit harder.”
The problem with taking steroids is the horrible disadvantages. The two areas that steroids affect is the physical appearance and the mental aspects of a person. The physical defects of taking steroids are not that well known to people. “Steroid abuse can cause Breast development and genital shrinking in men, masculinization of the body in women, and acne and hair loss in both sexes.”
“The abuse of oral or indictable steroids is associated with higher risks for heart attacks and strokes, and abuse of most oral steroids is associated with increased risk for liver problems.” ...
