The High School Fan
Cheering, yelling, and praying are all in the job description for being a high school football fan. Both small and big schools are filled with school spirited fans, that love the feeling of coming to a Friday night game. As the fans march in to their own backyard stadium they are bombarded with the Friday night jitters, different aromas filling the surrounding area, and the brisk October air, are a few of the things that you “the fan” experiences during a night of entertainment.
It’s mid October and Friday night that can only mean one thing in east Tennessee, high school football. The town scurries around talking about what might happen in tonight’s game. Businesses support their local high school by cheering them with signs that say “go team go.” Everyone is dresses in school colors and memorabilia while encouraging the football team to do well. By the time 7:00 begins to roll in the whole town seems to be at the high school getting ready to support their team. Fans begin to arrive in mobs and enter through the gate preparing to yell for their team. The crowd starts to get antsy as the fulfillment of excitement becomes overwhelming. Game time is near and the announcer asks everyone to stand for the national anthem. With pride for their country each fan stands to their feet and sings along with the national anthem. The team lines up and is ready to storm the field and take their positions. Fans gather around the field and forms a tunnel as each player runs out on to the field as the announcer says each name. It’s game time in east Tennessee.
Touchdown! The crowd goes crazy, and everyone is on their feet giving their neighbors a high-five, as they just finished watching a player from the team they proudly cheer for run as fast as he could sidestepping the defenders as they tried to launch their selves towards his feet. The crowd increases in volume while the announcer begins ...
