He believes he will be a famous baseball player, wanting to gain fame and the
” American Dream”. But he only sees future greatness for himself. He is unable to focus or anyone else and feels he is entitled to greatness because he has such great talent. This is illustrated by his inability to see the bigger picture of working with others for a team goal, giving back, and the real purpose of life. Because of this self centeredness, he is unable to answer the right question of a crazed fan. She wanted to hear him say “the team would go all the way”, but he could only focus on himself. Thus, he is shot and his future in baseball as he planned it is taken away from him. This life threatening injury unconsciously provoked an underlying fear of not being able to be the best. This causes him to give up and live his life for the next fifteen years without baseball.
