D. Submission of an abstract evaluation.

The undergraduate dissertation –

After evaluating the undergraduate dissertation by Gregory woods, with the title ‘testing Magee’s (1998) typology with regard to pan-pacific professional rugby players in Wales.’ It is noticeable that there are a number of positives and negatives within the abstract that need to be established. This abstract is divided into three paragraphs. The first paragraph sets the scene of the study and provides the aims. The second paragraph is a clear review of the methodology used and applied. The final paragraph summarises the study and outlines the conclusions found.
The abstract covered the four main requirements needed for an abstract student thesis which include, establishing a topic of research; to summarise the research; to indicate the methodology used and to prevent the main findings and conclusions.
However, when these four requirements are broken down into paragraphs, it appears that perhaps a whole paragraph which includes methods used may have been slightly excessive and maybe more emphasis should have been placed on the discussion and the results.
Another mistake that is clear to see is that the explanation of method used is in the second paragraph rather than in the first which is not a normal layout you would expect to see in an abstract student thesis.
Other than that the abstract followed the usual trend revival, i.e. it did not exceed the correct amount of words that are needed; there was an introduction and suitable background information; a methodology was shown and findings and conclusions were given.

The second abstract evaluated was taken from the (Sociology of sport journal, 1996, p.125). The title given is ‘The fact(s) of Michael Jordan’s Blackness: Excavating a Floating Racial Signifier.’
