The Importance of Gymnastics

Clubs, societies and teams are plentiful at Lake Mary High School. Students have

numerous options to get involved in school. Although this is true, a gymnastics team is

not offered. Because of good sportsmanship, exercise, and drug use prevention a

gymnastics team should be incorporated into Lake Mary’s curriculum.

Admittedly, gymnastics can be confused with dance teams but gymnastics teaches

good sportsmanship. In gymnastics competitors participate in four different events. Each

participant is judged individually instead of as a team. If a teammate does better than the

rest, the team must support their champion. They may be jealous and inverted but pride

will overrule those emotions knowing that a winner will come back to school. These are a

few examples of good sportsmanship learned from gymnastics.

It is true that gymnastics teaches good sportsmanship but it also promotes

exercise. The skills necessary for gymnastics require upper body strength. Some

workouts that held build strength are muscle toning, aerobics, cardiovascular training and

Pilates. These tasks demand daily rehearsals. A gymnast should train for at least three

hours a day. This amount of exercise guarantees flexibility and energy. Incorporating a

gymnastics team into the curriculum would decrease student obesity and prevent drug

abuse.

In addition to exercise, gymnastics prevents drug use. Since gymnasts train for up

to three hours a day their free time is limited. This may sound discouraging but being

busy leaves no time for drugs. Gymnasts usually have a positive outlook on live. They

would not waste their life on drugs. Being surrounded by this upbeat attitude makes it

easy to turn down an offer to hurt their bodies.
