The Glory of “Sportscenter”

As far back as technology would allow, there have always been programs that covered sports. Game recaps, stats, highlights, and even low-lights were included in each show. First came shows on the radio, and soon after came shows on television. But with a show dedicated to strictly delivering information to its audience, one might ask, how much of a difference could television make for this type of entertainment venue? Until the mid 1970s, the answer to this question would be very little to no difference. But then along came a show called “Sportscenter”, which would set a new standard of delivering sports news forever.

So what makes “Sportscenter” such a dynamic program? Its anchors. The anchors on this show are believed by many to be the top in the field. So much so that all former “Sportscenter” anchors have been given or at least offered their own sports shows on rival networks. Being able to see the anchors’ facial expressions and mannerisms is what makes this show so visually entertaining. The show consists of several anchors appearing in pairs, each pair designated to a different day of the week. This is similar to the rotation of a baseball team’s pitching staff. Catch phrases such as “As cool as the other side of the pillow”, and “Boo-yah!” are what gives each anchor his or her own recognition. These catch phrases are also often imitated by many other sportscasters not on the show.

The anchors are probably the greatest attraction of the show, but there are other reasons why many choose this as their source of sports information. One big reason would have to be its convenience. “Sportscenter” airs every hour, on the hour, from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM. No matter what time you wake up in the morning, there is no way you can miss your sports show. You are guaranteed to know all the events in the world of sports that occurred the night before.
