Dr. James Naismith of the Springfield, Massachusetts, YMCA invented the game of basketball in 1891. It quickly grew into a leading United States school and college sport and spread throughout the world. Professional basketball gained great popularity in the U.S. after the formation in 1949 of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Today millions of fans crowd into gyms and arenas to watch their favorite teams. Millions more watch games on television. While college basketball and professional games both create much excitement, for me the college competition is much more entertaining.
College basketball is definitely more of a team game. It involves all players more than professional games, which are more of a one-on-one match up where other team members tend to stand around and observe. I personally like to see everyone participate rather than just a couple of players. College players are also a lot more energetic on the court than NBA players which makes them a lot more fun to watch. The NBA plays eighty-two games a year, and college teams usually play around thirty depending on how well they do in the tournaments. Because the NBA players play so many games, sometimes on consecutive nights, they tend not to play as hard. Each game means a lot more to college players because they do not have near as many games.
The fan support and the crowds at college basketball games are sometimes unbelievable! The players live on campus and have established friendships. It becomes personal - the students go to the games to support the team, their friends, and the college

or university. Some college fans even go to the extent of making signs, painting faces, painting their bodies, or even going to the games without a shirt on. This kind of stuff is great to me.
