unmistakable; stickers strewn around the body of the car, big wings, big rims, lowered to the
ground, and usually a high pitched growl emanating from the big exhaust pipe. Parts like these
found on these cars are often not very cheap. In the documentary “Tokyo Hardcore: Night
warriors”, the racer with the littlest amount of money spent on his care was $20,000. The
varying amounts ranged from $20,000 all the way up to $200,000.

The Race
Ever since the days of Jimmy Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause”, and “American Graffiti”
people have been always tweaking with their big block Chevy’s and Mustangs, and racing them.
The latest fad in racing has been the import street racing scene. This was started in the early
1990’s by a crew of Asian American boys in Southern California. From there it has spread all
across the country from California, all the way to New York City, and even to other countries,
such as Japan and Canada.
Contrary to popular belief, the movie “Fast and the Furious” does not show true to life
street racing. For a very real account of a race, The article “Racer X”, by Kenneth Li describes a
real race, and how it goes. The account begins around dusk, on the Henry Hudson Parkway in
New York City. A group of small Japanese cars wind their way through traffic, and cut off all
traffic. Then two cars come to the front and line up, a black Nissan 240SX, and a white
Mitsubishi Starion. A large man steps out of his car and steps in between the two cars, puts his
hands in the air, then drops them to signal the start of the race. “10mph: Nissan ahead by one car
length, 40mph: both drives slam into second gear, the tires chirp, 100mph: the Starion pulls
closer, 160mph: the Nissan starts to shake from th...
