Steroids have been around for quite sometime. Steroids were first developed in the 1930's. The Germans first experimented using them on dogs; then they used them on their own soldiers during World War II. They also used steroids on their prisoners to help them stay healthy because they suffered from significant malnutrition. The word of this “miracle drug” spread quickly throughout Europe. In the 1950's many Russian and European athletes began to use steroids and they found them to be very beneficial in reaching their goals. As a result, the Russians soon began dominating the sport of powerlifting, crushing previous world records. In the mid-1950's it was proven, by Dr. Ziegler, an American scientist, that testosterone was the reason behind the improved athletic ability. Soon after their findings, he and his labs were producing Dianabol or Methandrostenolone. A decade later, steroids were available on the market. At that time they were being used by both athletes and doctors on a regular basis. On March 1, 1991, the Federal Anabolic Control Act went into effect. The Act put anabolic steroids on the schedule III of the Controlled Substance Act, making them an illegal substance without a prescription. Today there are clinics that will prescribe testosterone and HGH (human growth hormone) to qualified patients. Steroids can be taken in two different ways; they can be taken orally or they can be injected. The steroids that are injected are broken down can either last a very long period of time or for a short period of time.
