Many sports figures retire at the pinnacle of their career so that they can proclaim to have gone out on top. One very prominent player to do this was Michael Jordan. After winning his sixth NBA championship he hung up his jersey and was thought to have never returned to the sport, but after two and a half years he has returned to help a dying franchise that he holds a part ownership spot for. Michael Jordan should not return to the NBA because he has done enough for the sports industry, he may tarnish his perfect reputation if he is not as good as before, and contrary to the fact that many people believe that he should return to attain the all time scoring title, he is considered by many to be the best, therefore the award is unnecessary for him to achieve.
Michael Jordan has changed sports in almost every possible way. He started the trend of players having their “own” shoe, and he also paved the way for many other sports players to have endorsements. After Jordan started doing McDonald’s, Nike, Gatorade and Wheaties commercials, other sport’s figures followed him and signed with the same endorsement deals. He has provided a new standard in almost everything. This ranges from not only sports but for music also. Jay-Z claims himself to be “The Mike Jordan of rap”. Players are now striving to be more than just the best in their sports, but now they are trying to be the “Michael Jordan” of their sport. This alone shows how much impact he had on the sports world.
As mentioned earlier, Michael Jordan is considered the best by many in basketball. If Michael returns and is anything below the best, he will lose a lot of respect from many of his fans. This may also cause a downfall in many of his products because of the fact that nobody supports a “loser”.
