INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this assignment is to explore both the positive and negative affects of tourism on protected areas. A new demand for Nature-based, adventure and eco- tourism has risen significantly in Canada over the past decade, creating a major window of opportunity for Canada’s tourism industry (Buckley, 2002). As this trend rises, National and Provincial parks in existence are receiving a great deal of attention by Governments and Protection Agencies. New protected areas are being drafted and implemented in all parts of Canada in hopes of equal monetary distribution (Lansing, 2002).
The relationship between tourism and protected areas is not an easy one. The threat of negative ecological impacts from rapidly augmenting levels of visitation and visitor infrastructure continues to cause considerable anxiety for protected area managers and conservation agencies (Buckly, 2002).
