When people mention physical interaction sports, the most physical that come to my mind are football and rugby. Both sports are called physical because there are immense hits and both require physical and mental stamina. Though football and rugby are similar in some ways, they differ in equipment use, rules and players.
Equipment used among football and rugby players is different. Football players wear a helmet, hip pads, thigh pads, a tailbone pad, shoulder pads, and knee pads to protect themselves from injury. Also, the use of protective pads and a helmet enables a football player to take hits and not be as injured as if they had not worn protection at all. Rugby, however, uses no protective pads at all. When hit, there is no protection to absorb the shock, making it harder to recover.
The rules of football and rugby are a lot more different than similar. In football after being tackled, the offense has forty-five seconds to comprise a play, hike the ball, and attempt to score a touchdown. A touchdown is worth six points, a field goal is worth three points, a safety is worth two points, which is tackling the offense behind the defense’s goal line, or a two point conversion, and one point or an extra point, also known as P.A.T. (point after touchdown). After being tackled, a rugby player has several options: running with the ball until downed, or until there is another chance to pass the ball, kicking the ball down the field, or immediately passing the ball to another teammate. After the scrum half chooses to pass the ball, the teammates attempt to advance the ball forward and across the opponents’ goal line. Scrum is a play in rugby in which the two sets of forwards mass together around the ball, with their heads down and struggle to gain possession of the ball.
