Professional athletes are most likely to use these drugs during their training stages (pre-season). College athletes take a huge risk when using these drugs. If they get caught they can loose their scholarships or get kicked out of college. Where these drugs are being more used are in the high schools because there is so many more kids in high then college and the pro’s. Athletes hear about the pros using the drugs and they see the difference it makes, but what they don’t know is the long-term effects and to properly use these drugs. The three most common drugs used are Anabolic steroids, amphetamine, and human growth hormone (HGH).
ANABOLIC STEROIDS
Anabolic steroids are the most common drug used by athletes. Body builders, football, track and field power events, and weight lifting mostly use these. There are two ways athletes take steroids orally and by injection. Oral steroids are very hard on the liver. Since the steroid level is so high, the liver is overworked and it can’t keep up. As the liver becomes damaged, it’s liquid; bile is released into the bloodstream. Bile is normally squirted into your stomach to help you digest fatty foods. When the bile gets into your blood, it makes your skin and the whited part of your eye turn yellow. Long term steroid use may decrease our defense against the thousands of viruses, bacteria, and fungi to which we are exposed. This same immune system also takes care of the occasional cancer cell.
