It focuses on how to learn rather than on learning specific information. It encourages critical analysis of all material presented in the classroom, encouraging the same for material people sharing their stories and learning from the stories of others. It makes all of us part of history, as opposed to focusing on historical dates, facts, and figures. It calls for a more accurate curriculum instead of an Eucentric one.
It acknowledges that different children have different learning styles. It takes into consideration the learner and his or her relationship to the material. It recognizes that the measure of one’s learning is not only the new information or understanding that one has gained but also includes the extent to which their everyday life (Gorski & Covert, The Multicultural Pavilion 1).
It facilitates communication between students, their teachers and the rest of society. It insists upon a real consideration for important social issues such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, etc. (Gorski & Covert The Multicultural Pavilion).
Multiculturalism is different to everyone; its meaning can be interpreted in many ways. Some say it is necessary in our schools today and teachers should be trained to teach it. They need to be able to understand something about the minorities in order to have hooks and illustrations that make since so that they can build on that brainwork in order for the students to understand, plus they reject rejection and not themselves and/or others (Betances).
Most parents, especially from these types of backgrounds, cannot help their children with their schoolwork, teachers have to understand this and be able to see the need inside their students. If they cannot see it through the work produced by the children they should be tested to find out what they do know, instead of continuously testing them on what they do not understand (Betances).
