STATISTICS
A total of 3.1 million cases were reported to juvenile authorities an increase of 132 percent over the previous decade. The true figure is surely much higher since most cases go unreported.
There are more than 200,000 cases of child sexual abuse reported each year; which is not completely accurate due to feelings of guilt, confusion and fear.
Under the endangerment standard, the number of abused and neglected children nearly doubled from 1986 to 1993. Physical abuse nearly doubled, sexual abuse more than doubled, and emotional abuse, physical neglect, and emotional neglect were all more than two and one-half times the NIS-2 level.
The total number of children seriously injured and the total number endangered both quadrupled during this time.
Gender and Race
Girls are 3 times as more likely to be sexually abused than boys.
Boys have a greater risk of being emotionally neglected or occurring serious injuries than do girls.
There is no drastic race difference in the treatment of children.
Characteristics of Family
Children of single parents had a 77% greater risk of being harmed by physical abuse, 87% risk of being harmed by physical neglect, and 80% rise of suffering serious injury and harm from abuse or neglect than children living with both parents.
Children from the lowest income families were 18% times more likely to be sexually abused, 56% more likely to be educationally neglected, and over 22% more likely to be seriously injured from maltreatment.
Referrals and Reports
There was 2,974,000 referrals received in 1999, approximated 60.4% were transferred for further investigation, and 39.6% were screened out.
Out of all the reports that were file 54.7% of the reports were reported from professionals.
Family member or the community reported the remaining 45.3% reports.
