Beer or Books?

You see them everywhere, ads for alcohol, cigarettes, even underwear. All are forms of visual argument. You look at these advertisements every day, and probably don’t think twice about them, but without realizing it, you are thinking more about them than you know. For my visual argument, I analyzed two different Miller Lite beer ads. The first ad had the title “It’s like a Book club. Only with Beer instead of Books.” There is a woman in the corner with a caption coming out of her mouth stating “I love this Beer!” Below that, there is a circle of people resembling students, and all are male, sitting around a campfire. They are all relaxed and stretched out. The fire in the center of the circle has the Miller Lite emblem in the middle of it. In the lower left hand corner, there are two pictures, one of a long highway, and one of the arm of a chair with a cup holder stating, “reload.”
I believe that this ad is appealing to mostly the college male audience. Of course beer is more appealing to males ranging from 18 years of age to 30 years of age. It shows all these young guys sitting around the fire just “chilling,” with each other, “kicking it.” They are very comfortable, and seem to be giving the impression that they are relaxed, taking advantage of guy time. Guy time is very important to most males. It is their time to get away, and by Miller Lite exploiting that aspect of the life of a male, it gives the viewers the impression that if they drink Miller Lite, they are going to be more relaxed, and guy time is going to be better, more fun.
The woman in the corner who is saying “I love this beer,” is also influential. A woman stating that she loves Miller Lite is going to make males more prone to drinking it. They will think that if the ladies like Miller Lite, they will like him for drinking Miller Lite, making a man more confident of himself during social experience...
