Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. There are two types of abortion. The first is chemical, which is the use of a pill that is taken to induce an abortion. Some of the medications that are given are RU-486 and methotrexate. The second is a surgical abortion, which is when the doctor actually goes in and surgically removes the fetus. With in the surgical abortion there are a few different types they are: suction aspiration, dilation and curettage, dilation and evacuation, dilation and extraction also know as partial-birth abortion, salt poisoning, prostaglandins, and hysterotomy-cesarean. Some of the surgical abortions can be done in the 3rd trimester, just a reminder that there are only three trimesters during a pregnancy. The 1st trimester is the first three months, 2nd trimester is four to six months, and the 3rd trimester is seven to nine months.
RU-486 is a drug given to women, and it causes them to have a miscarriage. First the medicine progesterone causes starvation to the fetus. All the nutrients, which are found in the lining of the uterus, are depleted causing the fetus to die. Second the drug misoprostol is taken causing the actual miscarriage of the fetus. The second chemical abortion is methotrexate. This drug directly attacks the fast growing cells in the fetus and causes it to die.
