Endoplasmic reticulum is a membrane network within the cytoplasm of cells involved in the synthesis, modification, and transport of cellular materials. It can be known as ER can be classified as a rough ER when ribosomes are attached to the cytosolic side of the membrane or smooth ER when no ribosomes are present. Rough ER is prominent in cells that are making proteins for export such as digestive enzymes, hormones, structural proteins or antibodies. The rough looks rough due to the ribsomes embedded to its outer most layer. The main function for rough ER is the segregation of proteins destined for export from the cell or for intracellular use. On the other hand, smooth ER lacks attached ribsomes and often appears more tubular then rough ER. Smooth ER synthesizes lipids, carbohydrates, and detoxifies drugs and other poisons. It is important in the smooth ER of the liver cells....
