Following a vegetarian diet is a personal choice, as is any diet. There are three types of vegetarians and many other types of vegetarian diets. When vegetarianism gained popularity. When vegetarianism Generally, vegetarians do not eat meat. Vegetarianism usually means eating many kinds of plant products such as grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Other vegetarians eat dairy products such as milk, butter, and cheese. Some vegetarians include eggs in cooked or baked foods. Some will not eat meat, but sometimes enjoy fish or poultry. Still others will not eat any foods that come from an animal. Because so many people have chosen a vegetarian diet, many meatless food choices are available. Restaurants offer tasty vegetarian dishes, and supermarkets sell vegetarian foods. Many Internet sites and public classes teach about vegetarianism. So not all vegetarians eat all the same foods. No single vegetarian diet exists. Most vegetarians fall into four groups: lacto-ovo, lacto vegetarian, ovo vegetarian, and vegan. Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian is the largest vegetarian group in North America. Lacto means milk, and ovo means eggs. People in this vegetarian group eat dairy products such as milk and ice cream. They also eat eggs and vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts in their diet. They avoid meat, fish, and poultry. Lacto Vegetarian and Ovo Vegetarian is the second vegetarian group.
