They later started a weekly paper, the West Side News, with Wilbur as the editor. Wilbur and Orville later sold their printing business and opened a bicycle shop to sell and repair bicycles. They named their bicycle shop The Wright Cycle Company. The Wright Cycle Company was even more successful than their printing shop and they eventually got so big that they went to a second location. After three years spent studying the design of bikes built by other bicycle makers, the brothers decided that they could offer a better product.
They turned the back room of their store into a light machine shop and took up the challenge of building a bicycle. A self-oiling wheel hub was one of the Wright’s first inventions. Solving mechanical problems appealed to both brothers a lot more than the day-to-day operations of a business did.
