The author Donovan Webster and a group of explores venture to the South Pacific island of Ambrym to document volcanic pits on the island. This story talks about Photographer Carston Peter and why he continues to climb into the volcanoes. Plus Webster paints a very vivid picture of the events that happen on the trip. Also he describes their drop into Marum.
Protographer Carston Peter has been around valcano’s since he was 15 when his parents took him to Italy on vacation. While in Italy they took hiom to Mount Etna. Ever since then he has been fascinated with volcanoes. He has taken trips to Hawaii, Iceland, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. In this adventure with author Donovan Webster Peter is his guide. Showing him how to descend into the great holes filled with molten rock. Peter has been descending into volcanoes close to a decade. Peter says, “The size and power of a volcano is like nothing else on Earth.” I believe he love to watch earth and her fury and this is why he continues to drop into these dangerous holes.
Webster talks in great detail about their hike to these craters and the way that they look and colors that they have. Webster discusses how the vegetation grows up the volcano and then in a matter of a few hundred yards all life is deceased. In the story Webster talks about as night falls on the first night Peter tells them to watch as the vents light the gas clouds making each of the three craters have red glows. He says, “that at their first base camp they could barley sleep due to the earth rumbled. The expedition will start at the third red glow they saw which is Niri Taten. Peter describes Niri Taten As a “small pig, a small mad pig, a crazy pig that causes trouble to men.” While their hike is continued a few miles behind them Benbow gives of a huge burst of ash into the sky.
