“The Effect of Germination on the Cellular Respiration of Peas”

Abstract Does temperature affect the rate of cellular respiration for peas? In this experiment collect 25 three-day-old germinated peas, 25 five-day-old germinated peas, and 25 non- germinated peas and test the rate of cellular respiration. Place the three-day-old germinated peas that were at room temperature into a respiration chamber and twist the CO2 gas sensor stopper into the opening. Then measure the concentration of carbon dioxide in the chamber and collect this data for five minutes using the computer. Hold down the mouse button on the point where the data began to increase and then drag it to the end of the data. By clicking the Regression button a floating box will appear with the formula for the best-fit line. Repeat these steps for the five-day-old germinated peas as well as the non-germinated peas. Also, cool the three day old and the five-day-old germinated peas by placing them in ice water. Once cooled and dried repeat the previous steps explained. The three-day-old germinated peas at room temperature had a respiration rate of 201 ppm/min and the five-day-old germinated peas at room temperature had a respiration rate of 181 ppm/min. Compared to the respiration rate of the three-day-old germinated peas at a cool temperature, which had a respiration rate of 71 ppm/min, and the respiration rate of the five-day-old germinated peas at a cool temperature, which was 153 ppm/min, it can be concluded that temperature does affect the rate of cellular respiration in peas.Introduction Cellular respiration is among the growth processes that are sensitive to temperature (Thayer). Organisms obtain energy by breaking down energy storing molecules through the process of cellular respiration (Gedney and Labus). Cellular respiration is performed when oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is produced. Temperature greatly affects cellular respiration by re...
