This week we discussed a topic that I am very passionate about. Homeopathy is the therapeutic use of medications in a similar way to make a person feel better. Maricela presented the introduction and gave a brief description of the history and a few events. Homeopathy is Greek for “homo,” meaning similar and “pathy,” meaning diseases and suffering. Samuel Hahneman was the first to conduct Homeopathy studies back in the 1700’s. One of his cases used poison from a tree as a comparison to the symptoms that were found in malaria patients. I feel that since they found a way to compare symptoms they tried to use that towards the positive aspects. This is an example of Post Hoc Fallacy.
Homeopathy was introduced to America in 1824, and people did Homeopathy started to gain popularity in 1865-1895. By the year 1900 there were 22 colleges dedicated to homeopathy.
Jamie presented the con argument since there was no pro argument. He gave a good presentation and proved us information that may prove that homeopathy is all in the mind. He stated that there are many disadvantages to the use of herbal remedies. There are many sorts of herbs that provoke positive results and in that sense there are many herbs that also are poisonous and cause great harm to our body.
Since herbs are created by nature no to herbs are the same and just because one happened to work does not necessarily mean that it works all the time. For example when you buy peppers at the store you know that they are all hot, but you don’t know that a few of them are not as hot as the other ones. That explains that using a herb because it cured a symptom does not mean it will work next time. This is an example of fallacy of hasty generalization; because there is not enough evidence to prove that the herb will treat the illness at all times.
