d where it will be used for building cells. Without insulin, the glucose or blood sugar builds up overflowing into the urine, finally passing out of the body. The body, even though it contains large amounts of glucose in its blood stream, ends up loosing its main source of fuel.
Diabetes comes in four major forms: Pre-Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes (which is insulin dependent) Type 2 Diabetes (which is insulin-resistant) and Gestational.
According to the Diabetes Mall, Pre-Diabetes is when a person has an Impaired Glucose Tolerance, or IGT. IGT is caused when the body has a blood glucose level that is higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. The target groups for pre-diabetes are those “who are overweight, especially in the abdominal area, those with a family history of diabetes, people with steroid induced hyperglycemia, or those having a hypertension or abnormal lipid profile.” ( ) An estimated 20 million people have IGT and the number is rapidly increasing. Fifty percent of these people will form the diabetes known as type 2 diabetes unless they change their lifestyle to one of healthy eating and exercise. Some of the other risks of pre-diabetes besides the formation of type 2 diabetes include: “increased risk of heart attack, coronary artery disease, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.”( ) “IGT should be treated with glucose monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, fasting lipid profiles, weight control and nutritional education even before diabetes has fully developed.”( )
