During this time of inner turmoil for Shepard, his father fell ill. Shepard’s answer to this problem is a simple one, pray. “I did pray very strongly and heartily for the life of my father and made some covenant, if god would do it, to serve him the better…”(4) Shepard swore an oath to devote his life to god if his father would be saved, but that as it turned out did not solve the problem. At the age of ten Shepard was left without both parents yet he did not turn his back on God, he maintained his faith.
