Anton Szander LaVey (1875-1947), a protruding ceremonial magician, was a man who actually started teaching these beliefs as a religion, and in a constructive way. As the creator of The Church of Satan, LaVey was raised off of Judeo-Christian principles. Judeo-Christian principles are essentially the belief in good versus evil, and a belief in some "higher calling" or belief in something "more important than self". In 1947, LaVey created a minor religion called Thelema, which is similar to Satanism, or a branch of it. Often being called the “Wickedest Man in the World”, LaVey even created a term: Magick, simply meaning black magic (Terry). LaVey is credited to be the one who kicked Satanism to its feet, but later on a man named Aleister Crowley came into the picture, according to . Crowley also used black magic, but in a more evil status. His preaching’s and beliefs were mostly based on human and animal sacrifice, violence playing a large part in his life and writings. This style of life is probably where the prejudice of Satanism being all about devil worship and violence came from (B.A. Robinson).
Even though Satanism is distinctly the opposite of this life style, it is viewed to be this way regardless.
