One of the critiques about Harvey’s model is that it seems to miss the idea that Jesus’ ministry has a lot to do with Israel. For example, the idea that Jesus’ healings were a way to bring some of the outcast Jews back into the Jewish community. It is exactly at this point of weakness for Harvey that Borg is strong.

Marcus J. Borg is a professor of religion and culture in the philosophy department at Oregon State University. He received his doctorate from Oxford University.
