My Relationship With Myself

When asked about the relationship with myself, initially I was speechless. I have rarely directed my thoughts and feelings towards myself. However, through the teachings of this class and additional readings, I have become more knowledgeable about myself and am able to respond to questions about me and understand myself. The topics that will be addressed in this paper will include positive thinking with self-talk, defense
mechanisms, self-esteem, self-awareness, stress and emotions. These topics were chosen because I can relate to them very well, and writing this paper allowed me to become more intimate with them and learn more about them so that I may continue to change the
aspects of my life that I am not happy with. This paper will also discuss how these characteristics correlate to the relationship with myself.
The first characteristic is positive thinking and self-talk. There are many excellent reasons to use positive thinking in your everyday routine. The authors or our text book, Becoming Aware, on page eighty, explain that positive moods can help us to think more clearly, increase optimism and raise self-esteem. A positive mood creates a positive attitude, which paves the pathway throughout the day for a feeling of control over the environment and circumstances. However, positive thinking is very difficult for the majority of the population. It seems as though many of us are very pessimistic and negative. It is no wonder so many people do not live up to their full potential. We have all of these negative thoughts and feelings around saying that we are not good enough and we will never become anything. Some of us have developed the ability to shut the negative thoughts out, and use self-talk to reinforce it.
