h an intrinsic motivation, which is the desire to do a task for its own sake, such as learning, gaining knowledge, and achieving success. But the students who want to avoid a failure are those with an extrinsic motivation, which is the desire to do something but not for its own sake, for example, to impress parents and friends or not to look stupid in front of other students. Terrel Bell, the former minister of education of USA said, “There are three main things in education that we always have to remember. First – motivation. Second – motivation. And third – motivation.” (Maehr & Meyer 1997:372). Indeed, the effectiveness of the process of studying in universities mostly depends on how high is the level of students’ motivation. Claus thought that studying is already an achievement and the most important part of studying is motivation for achievement. (Claus, 1987)
As researches show, for students who are oriented on failure the studies are much harder than for those who are motivated for success, even if they have equal intelligence. That is why it is very important to have an academic motivation.
Rubenstein thought that all human actions are deliberate and expedient. (Rubenstein, 1999) Each person chooses his goals individually and is responsible for all of his actions. Maslow said, “Continuous and inescapable desire is one of the main features of human being and it goes with him throughout his live.” (Maslow, p.65) For him, human beings always desire for something and are never fully satisfied, and even if they are satisfied than not for a long time.
