Rap Music...Does It Cause Violence?

Young people look up to these stars and try to be just like them, sometimes imitating their behavior and repeating the ideas portrayed in the songs. Many young teenagers and minority groups view rappers as their spokesmen because of their ability to speak in street language and bluntly express their frustrations (Krohn et al. 1995).
Rappers seem to take pride in their use of drugs and many of them have a history of drug dealing or drug abuse. Rapper Dr. Dre promoted drug use and had an album titled “The Chronic” with a marijuana leaf on the cover. Although there are limits set by the networks (such as MTV) Dre chose to shoot scenes for his videos which he knew would be censored, those of him smoking marijuana and wearing clothes with marijuana depicted on it. More recently rapper Eminem’s 2000 album had a song on it called “Drug Ballad” which includes lyrics such as,
