de the gates the barbaric and Bolshevik working classes tug their forelocks, stub out their cigarettes and line up to be slaughtered in the trenches of war and industry. So much for the shallow historical lessons that television teaches us. Cigars are now really the preserve of the hopeless parvenu. The terminally vulgar such as super-models and movie stars are the cigar smokers. Real estate agents and their blonde trophies gather in ridiculous bars in Parnell to yell loudly above dismal pop music about humidors and compare the length of their Cuban imports. Freud was actually quite wrong when he said a cigar is sometimes just a cigar. Some make up for their balding pates, spreading paunches and shrunken members by buying fast sports cars (always red - how Freudian is that?) Others smoke cigars. They’re the ones who claim they smoke for the taste which is very sad. There is nothing tasty about a mouth full of smoke. Real smokers do so because of a nameless force gnawing at their guts and it’s not addiction. Other people smoke cigars because of the associations with wealth and high living that such conspicuous consumption denotes. This is as shallow as believing that positive thinking will spare you from misfortune. These people believe every piece of status advice handed out by our mass media which is founded on nothing but the drive to sell more consumer goods to people who already have enough of everything except the ability to see through the tawdry sham that is mass consumerism. We can ignore cigar smokers if we want to know anything interesting about smoking. They think that they don’t really hurt themselves because they don’t really inhale...
