lt has given an incorrect portrayal of tourism in the country. I will discuss how this affects Thailand and its people.
I have learnt from my experience living in Southeast Asia, that it has been believed through out history that Vietnam was the beginning of the creation of the sex industry throughout Southeast Asia. Basically, Thailand became a popular location during the Vietnam War for the American soldiers to relax, who were willing to pay for sexual favors. Because of this, many brothels and bars were created in a short matter of time. Thailand was greatly focused in promoting the improvement of growth of the tourist industry.
Approximately 500,000 prostitutes were left over after the war, and were seen as a great asset in bringing finances from outside countries in. Sex tours were created in Japan and Taiwan, bringing in many people that were open spenders that greatly contributed to the growth of tourism. Between the early 1970’s to the 1990’s the number of tourists increased from 1 million to over 5 million. The Thai government never made an effort in controlling this sex tourism. Instead, it was encouraged as an important factor in the country’s growth. Up until now, the tourist industry has greatly influenced the economic growth so much that there would be an economic collapse if the tourist industry were to decrease in numbers. This would only contribute more to the poverty in the country.
