Most of the states in European Union are unitary. There are several federal states however. Some of them practice more “traditional” forms of federalism (Germany and Austria) while others (Spain, Belgium) are in favour of modified forms of federalism. The main question posed in this paper is what the impact that the process of integration have on the center- regions relations in two EU member states: Germany and Austria.
This paper aims to examine the impact of European integration on center- regions relations in Federal Republics of Germany and Austria, identify it’s main feature, compare two cases, look at the response of regions to a threat to their power base and at the end it will try to answer the question whose regions were affected most and what were the best strategies used to cope with this developments.
