The term communisms was later reserved for the philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Marx and Engels put forth their theory in their Communist Manifesto and the movement that they fathered in Central Europe. Since the Russian Revolution of 1917 the term has denoted a model that all Marxists should follow. The Russian Revolution began a shift in modern communism. Communism started moving away from Central and Eastern Europe. From the late 1940’s through the 1980’s communist movements were often linked with Third world countries and there pushes for nation independence and their desire for social changes (Pious, 24).
Throughout their writings Marx and Engels tried to analyze contemporary society. They saw modern society as capitalistic and bad. Marx and Engels pointed out there were major discrepancies between the ideals and reality of modern society. Although rights were supposedly granted to all it had not done away with injustices; the self-government of the constitution had not done away with corruption and mismanagement; science had acquired control over nature, but could not control fluctuation in the economy. Modern production was very efficient and provided and excess of merchandise and food. Even with this efficiency there was still mass poverty (Pious, 118). Marx and Engels saw that throughout the history of mankind we have tried to control nature. They saw humans using their creativity and potential for the betterment of the human race. This ongoing struggle for the betterment of the human condition has been very successful and is demonstrated through history. Still through this productivity mankind has exploited itself and created many great evils (Pious, 128). Marx argues that in every past social system the masses have been exploited by the few rich and powerful of society.
